The Gift of Education

The Gift of Education

The Gift of Education is an Online Gift registry for College Savings.  It’s the Easiest way to contribute to a child’s 529 or savings fund.  You can simply search for a child, and then make a payment via credit card.  On the backend I used the Zend Framework to organize the MVC code and  many Zend Modules (such as Zend_Form) to keep the code DRY.  There is integration with both Authorize.net and QuickBooks.  This was the first site that our studio developed with multiple developers, which means extensive use of Subversion was a lifesaver.  I also used Selenium on this project for automated testing, a big timesaver that I should have started using a long time ago.  Design by Rashael Parker.

For this site, navigation rollovers are handled completely with CSS and moving image “sprites” which results in fewer images to load, and cleaner markup with less code.  URLs are written using only slashes to separate query variables making them more user and SEO friendly.  A “Front-Controller” design pattern was used to avoid code repetition, and allow for easy site expansion.  Finally, a secure administrative area allows the client to update the database-driven crops list with an easy-to use interface.  Design by Brianne Leymaster.
